Excited to vote
I watched the President talk to members of the 42nd Infantry Division via video-teleconference (on Fox News Channel) and was struck by this thought: it must be pretty damned exciting to vote on your country's constitution. I mean, I didn't get to vote for my country's constitution.
I hope the people of Iraq take advantage of this history-making opportunity and exercise the right to do something they have never had a chance to do before.
I wish I was one of the Soldiers in Iraq right now. It must be fun and exciting to watch and encourage the good folks there.
UPDATE: The Fox News Story is here and in the comments, Randy mentions his wife, MSG Lombardo who gets the unique opportunity to speak with the President. In fact, she brings up that this was her second opportunity to speak with him, the first was shortly after 9/11 when he went to New York. You may also notice the Commander-in-Chief call her "sergeant major"!
I was working on trying to interview MSG Lombardo and post that interview on the blog, but she is extremely busy so I let it go for the time being (she did agree to the interview but I'm the one that let it drop, not her). I'm still interested in the interview, maybe at a later date when she's not so swamped. In the meantime, you can see her talk to the President along with a few other American Soldiers and an Iraqi Soldier by clicking on the Fox News Story link above. Then click on the video tab on the top box next to the opening paragraph of the story. When the pop-up video window opens, click on the "POLITICS" link on the lower left, then click on the "Face-to-Face" link to pull up the 15 minute video of the teleconference mentioned above.
One other note, is it me or does it sound like the Iraqi Soldier thanks President Bush for "anything"? I'm sure English is not his first language, but it brought a grin to my face. I'll bet he never thought he'd be talking to the American President! And he gets to vote on his country's constitution. Lucky guy.
And, yes, jordan (and any other naysayers out there) I would like to be there. I enthusiastically support Iraqi freedom and independence and am proud that my country and my Army had a huge role in helping bring freedom to Iraq. I don't need someone else to form my own opinions, either. I want to be where the action is, where things are happening at a time when I could have an impact on something more important than just day-to-day living.
You just sit tight, jordan, while the grown ups take care of history.
